The OTT rating, OTT standing for "over the top", is a very useful ability to a private VFR pilot normally limited to Visual Flight Rules (hence the acronym...) freeing him from restriction to fly under the clouds, this is especially true when they are 1000 feet...or less, above ground level. There is however a limitation to this ability, since it is mandatory that flight conditions remain VFR at departure and destination airports all the time.

Training is based on instruments flight and on radio navigation aids (VOR, ADF et GPS).
The flight-time already spent for the night-flight rating are deductible from the minimum required.

  • detain a valid private pilot licence (including 5 hours of instruments flight time) and a valid medical certificate
  • 10 hours of instruments flight time (including the use of radio navigation aids)
  • A recommendation letter from the instructor in charge of the training

This video clip, released by a private Pilot from CPAQ-AERO during a trip to the US, is the perfect demonstration of a good use of the OTT rating, take the time to watch it entirely.
